2014A young Shamrocks outfit produced another display beyond their years of experience to complete a come from behind 21 - 13 victory over Kiama at Ocean Park on Saturday. Coach Mark Joy will be very happy with the composure shown by his young charges as they overcame a halftime deficit of 10 – 13 to win over the previously unbeaten Kiama side. Conversely Kiama coach Darryl Thomas will be disappointed with his team’s second half effort as it was a Jeckle and Hyde performance from Kiama who dominated the first half but fell away in the second to suffer their first loss of the year.
Shamrocks got off to a nightmare start when Lock Damian Clark was sin binned for a lifting tackle after just two minutes. The next twenty minutes was all Kiama as they produced a very structured efficient game to camp deep in the Rocks territory. Despite dominating play Kiama could not break the Rocks determined defense, which is growing in reputation as phone number library the season progresses. Kiama Fly Half Ben King Gee opened the scoring with a penalty goal after 13 minutes. Ten minutes later with Shamrocks first visit to the Kiama quarter, front rower Chris Smith finished off a Rocks driving maul to score the opening try of the match. Converted by Jamie Pigram, Shamrocks took the lead 7 – 3. Kiama responded in the next ten minutes by scoring two five pointers through center Sam Moore and outstanding fullback Nathan Trindall. King Gee missed the conversions and Kiama held a deserved 13 – 7 lead with five minutes left till halftime. Right on halftime Tristram Storm added a penalty goal for the Rocks to bring up the halftime score.
As the first half belonged to Kiama the second belonged to the Rocks, with experienced Fly half Tristram Storm taking control of the match as he guided the side around the park. The structure Kiama showed in the first half deserted them after the break as Shamrocks took over the running. Storm added two penalty goals for a Shamrocks lead of 16 – 13 after 65 minutes. With nine minutes left Rocks center Andrew Parker produced some clever play deep in the Kiama quarter to find flanker Iszak Lunney with a long pass for the youngster to score in the corner. In the lead up to the try Kiama replacement player Steven Mellor took a heavy knock. With the medical staff concerned for him play was interrupted for 37 minutes as an Ambulance was called to the ground. After Paramedics checked Mellor out he was able to regain his feet and walk from the ground to everyone’s relief. After the delay Storm missed the conversion of the Lunney try for the Rocks to lead 21 – 13. Tristram Storm was strong for Shamrocks bringing plenty of composure to the side’s effort, with Jordan Whitehead continuing his strong form and fullback Luke Tonegato good from the back. For Kiama, flankers Michael Kauter and Stephen Emmett were busy and fullback Nathan Trindall stood out.
