Shadows in product photography can either add depth and interest or distract and detract from the product’s appeal. For most commercial photography, unwanted shadows are a common issue that can obscure details and make the product look less professional. Learning how to avoid unwanted shadows is essential to creating clean, attractive product images that showcase your items in the best light. Here are some effective tips and techniques to help you eliminate or control shadows during your product shoots.

1. Use Soft, Diffused Lighting

Harsh lighting creates strong, sharp shadows, which are often undesirable in product photos. To reduce this effect, use soft, diffused lighting. Softboxes, umbrellas, or light tents are great tools for diffusing light evenly around the product. These modifiers spread the light source over a larger area, softening shadows and creating a flattering, even illumination.

Natural light can also work well if diffused properly — shooting shadow and reflection near a large window with sheer curtains or using a reflector to bounce light can help soften shadows naturally.

2. Employ Multiple Light Sources

Using more than one light source helps fill in shadows and reduce harsh contrasts.
