Microenterprises and SMEs as the driving force of the Spanish economy

According to the Quarterly Report on employment generated by small and medium-sized enterprises , SMEs and micro-enterprises are once again consolidating their position as the driving force of employment in Spain. This report was prepared by Randstad and CEPYME (Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) based on data from Social Security membership records.

In the first quarter of 2018, 22,000 people have joined the Spanish labour market , which means that there are a total of 614,000 more than in 2017. This indicates that employment growth is on the rise and more stable than in previous years. Smaller companies are the main contributors to the situation, as they generate 64.5% of the country's jobs .

Microenterprises
Microenterprises , i.e. companies with 1 to 9 employees, have generated 9,600 net employees during the first period of 2018. The sectors in which they are most active are the construction industry norway number data and food and beverage services . Retail trade is also noteworthy , which, despite having decreased in the quarterly variation, is the most important sector in which they carry out their activity.

In total, micro-enterprises produce 23% of total employment in the Spanish economy.

Small Business
Small businesses (10 to 49 employees) are the leaders of job growth in our country for the fourth consecutive quarter. They have generated 21,900 jobs and, in total, 167,672 workers have been hired by small businesses in this time.

The most important sectors are wholesale trade, food and beverage services, retail trade and education . These types of companies account for a quarter of the number of Social Security affiliates in the first three months of this year.

Medium-sized companies
As for medium -sized companies , with 50 to 249 employees, they have created 14,400 new jobs . In total, they have created more than 161,000 jobs in the last year, which translates into a 22% membership rate. The notable sectors of this group of companies are Public Administration, education and retail trade.

Microenterprises and SMEs are expected to continue contributing to job creation in Spain , although at a reduced level. The sectoral distribution will remain practically the same as before: without any major changes.

According to Eurostat, these companies are also considered drivers of the economy in Europe due to the employment they generate, the way they contribute to growth and, especially, to intra-community trade.
