A 308 Permanent Redirect is an HTTP response status code —a three-digit number sent by a web server in response to a client request—that indicates to browsers and search engines that a resource has been permanently moved to a new URL.

Other HTTP response status codes you may be familiar with include the 404 error which means the server cannot find the requested page.

As a user, it's usually obvious when russia phone number example you encounter an HTTP 404 response status code. You'll see an error page (like the one below).

But you typically won't notice an HTTP 308 response status code.

This is because when you encounter a 308 Permanent Redirect, the browser automatically redirects you to the correct URL.

And in terms of SEO, link equity—the value that links convey—and authority can also carry over to the new page.
