If only memories have come down to us from the Library of Alexandria built in the 3rd century BC, then the Library of Celsus was much luckier. Among the ruins of ancient Ephesus stands the facade of one of the largest repositories of ancient art and knowledge, which was the Library of Celsus in its time.

After his death, Aquila bequeathed large funds for the purchase of books and the arrangement of the library, where as a result more than 12,000 manuscripts and scrolls were collected and carefully stored. The construction of the building was completed in 135 by Aquila's heirs.

The sarcophagus with Celsus' body was located in a crypt under the central part of the reading room. The marble crypt was decorated with a bas-relief depicting Eros.

The interior of the library was destroyed by a fire that occurred in the second half of the third century during the Gothic invasion. Only the two-tiered façade of the building survived. In our time, it has been carefully restored and now looks like a theatrical set.

The height of the facade of the Celsus Library is 16 meters, and its length is 21 meters. The style of the library facade is reminiscent of ancient Greek and indicates a strong influence on Roman architecture. The niches on the first floor contain plaster copies of marble statues of Wisdom, Virtue, Thought and Knowledge. The originals are kept in the Ephesus Museum in Vienna.
