The Eclipse Foundation , one of the world’s largest open source software foundations, today announced the creation of the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group (WG). This new working group is tasked with fostering new data spaces based on open source technologies through the continuous exchange of data between private companies, governments, academia and other institutions to create an ecosystem for technological innovation spanning the European Union (EU) and beyond. Data spaces are federated networks of trusted connections for sharing data to facilitate information sharing for mutual benefit. They form a key element of the EU strategy to build a culture of innovation based on the values of privacy and data sovereignty.
To achieve this goal, the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group will provide governance, guidance, uk rcs data and support for open source solutions that enable development and participation in the data space. The working group does not favor any particular industry or type of organization. It is fully dedicated to enabling the global adoption of data space technologies to promote the creation and management of a trusted data sharing ecosystem.
“Dataspaces support federated, sovereign, and trusted data sharing. In doing so, they enable new business models where multiple actors can pool their data for their own benefit and create a trusted medium of data exchange that is decentralized, egalitarian, and secure,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation. “Open source software is the most logical means to create this new reality, and the Eclipse Foundation provides the ideal “code first,” vendor-agnostic governance model to bring this future to life.”
