The Chinese like to recall their glorious past, and rightly so, as one of the rare cultures that has survived nearly 5,000 years of history intact. But also the more recent one, marked by the invasion of foreign powers that threw themselves, to better despoil it, on what was then "the sick man of Asia" (1919). A period of humiliation for this empire that was for millennia, a land of wealth and innovation.
