As we mentioned in the introduction, copyright societies are the ones that make sure you get paid every time your song is played. In the US, there are three main copyright societies to choose from. (You can only choose one.) To make sure you get the royalties you're owed, your songs must be properly registered with ASCAP, SESAC, or BMI. Unfortunately, no. Only you, as a writer, can join a PRO.
Is there a fee?
Yes, copyright societies charge a membership fee. BMI charges $75 to join as a writer. ASCAP charges $50 to be a publisher and $0 to be a writer. SESAC is invitation-only. These fees generally vary depending on who you choose and whether you are an independent artist, publisher, or company. Before you start stressing, the process is very simple and straightforward.
