The first games were held from April 6 to 15 in the Panathenaic Stadium, Greece. Only 245 competitors attended the games, over 200 of them Greek. Only 14 countries were represented, and female athletes were not allowed to compete. Nevertheless, it was the first major international sporting event ever held, and it was generally considered a success by officials and the public alike. Despite Greece having more athletes, the United States ended up with the most champions, with eleven Americans taking first place in their events.
